GOVERNOR OF BAHAMAS

DUKE OF WINDSOR RESIGNS VALUABLE SERVICE TO COUNTRY (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 15. The Colonial Office has announced that the Duke of Windsor has tendered his resignation as. Governor and Com-mander-in-chief of the Bahamas, in which office he would have completed in August the term of five years for which colonial governors are now normally appointed. The announcement adds that the' Duke’s resignation will take effect at the end of April.

The King has approved the appointment of Mr W. L. Murphy, Colonial Secretary, Bermuda, to succeed the Duke.

The Duke of Windsor pointed oui to the press that he had served nearly five years, which is the normal term, as Governor of the Bahamas, therefqre the announcement of his resignation should cause no surprise, says the Nassau correspondent of the Associated Press.

Originally a Government House spokesman told the Associated Press that the Duke did not know about the London announcement, but later it was explained that the Duke believed that the announcement was nremature, and he did not want to comment until he could investigate the position. The Daily Express, in a leading article, says: “British and American relations are smoother in this war than in the last, and some of the credit is due to the Duke of Windsor, who, during four and a-half years in the Bahamas, has been an extra British Ambassador in the western hemisphere. He has been an efficient colonial governor and his personal popularity with Americans has been of immense war-time value to his country. The British people will be anxious to see his experience again used in the service of the Empire.”
