SHORTAGE OF PLUMBERS
POSITION IN AUCKLAND EFFECT ON BUILDING WORK (PA.) AUCKLAND, Mar. 16. •‘When sufficient timber and carpenters become available for the building programme now in prospect the rate of completing houses and other buildings cannot be materially increased because of the shortage of plumbers,” said Mr H. W. Coyle, president of the Master Plumbers’ Association, at a sitting of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day, when the cases of a large number of category A men held on appeal in industry were reviewed. Mr Coyle said the shortage of tradesmen affected all plumbing firms in the city. A large proportion of the repair work waiting to be attended to had been ordered by local body sanitary inspectors and by the Health Department, and some of it had been waiting for 12 months. Although plumbing material in the main was available for essential jobs, this did not apply to roofing iron, with the result that roof repairs were a long way behind.
