MINERS’ THREAT
COMMENT BY REPRESENTATIVE OF COMPANY CAUSES OF LOST OUTPUT (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 16. Commenting to-day on the decision of the Linton miners to cease work if the trucking vacancies are not filled by the end of next week, a representative of the company said that efforts were being made to secure additional truckers, but the fact that there was a shortage of truckers was no reason why the mine should be subjected to stoppages. If the employees at present engaged were to work full time as provided in the agreement, additional coal would be won and the existing staff could adequately handle the production. Early knocking off and undue absenteeism were responsible for the loss of a considerable quantity of coal. Since the beginning of this year, the company official added, there had been 55 possible working days, including to-day. and the Linton mine had been idle on 10 of these days on account of unauthorised stoppages. Apart from the amount of short time worked, this represented a loss of over 4000 tons of coal.
