D.J.C. MEETING

KINDERGARTEN’S EASY WIN

FOXLEAP SUCCESSFUL Bad weather wrecked the hopes that the concluding card for Wingatui on Saturday would be the 'basis of one of the most successful meetings ever held on the course. Rain continued to fail throughout the day until the last race, and the going became very heavy. In spite of the uninviting: conditions, there was a good attendance, and patrons had the pleasure of seeing some interesting racing. ■■■.'.-• Tlie D.J.C. Handicap was won by Foxleap after a good race, in which the favourite, Benbecula, stopped after looking dangerous at the home turn. Kindergarten and his rider-trainer, L. J. Ellis, were accorded a salvo of applause after winning the James Hazlrtt Gold Cup. The trophy- was received on behalf of the owner by the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C. Webb. As the small field raced from the seven-furlong post the horses sent up spray-as if they were galloping through a stream. There was no pace on over the first half-mile, which took 57 l-ssec. with Lord Nuffield leading the way until Kindergarten overhauled him In the straight.

The state of the going was principally responsible for 47 scratchings, but of these five were of horses fulfilling other engagements. In spite of the unfavourable weather, the card was concluded well up to time. The totalisator handled the sum of £34,490 10s. compared with £55.142 at last year’s meeting, a decrease of £20,651 10s.
