ACTIVE PATROLLING

ENEMY FIRE IN SERCHIO VALLEY LONDON, Jan. 2. The Germans increased the intensity of their artillery fire as Fifth Army forward troops rested in the enemy defences in the Serchio Valley area, which was the scene of the Germans' surprise attack last week, says Reuter’s Rome correspondent. On the Eighth Army front both sides patrolled actively along the Senio River bend south-west of Fusignano. A small German raiding party, supported by mortar fire, crossed the river, but was driven back.
