BANK OF NEW ZEALAND
GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS QUESTION RAISED IN HOUSE (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON. Nov: 21. An endeavour to obtain some indication of the action contemplated Dy the Government in regard to the recommendation of the Labour Party conference that the Bank of New Zealand should be acquired as a State venture was made by Mr C. M. Bowden (Oppn.. Wellington West) in an urgent question in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Bowden, whose question was addressed to the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, said that substantial numbers of bank shares were held by residents in the United Kingdom and other places beyond New Zealand. In view of the possible effects on the finances and economy of the Dominion of the establishment of a State trading bank and changed policy, he asked whether the Prime Minister would assure the House that no action to acquire such shares would be taken other than by legislation first submitted to the House for approval. “ I suggest that the question be placed on the order paper so that it can receive the consideration to which it is entitled,” replied the Prime Minister.
