RECUPERATIVE POWER
THE INDUSTRIOUS CHINESE China’s recuperative power is beyond computation, write 0. M. Green in the Fortnightly, London. In the revolution of 1911 the whole of the great citv of Hankow was burnt to the ground; scarcely a house remained. Yet within two years all traces of the disaster had disappeared and life buzzed through its crowded streets as of yore. It is safe to prophesy that China will be the first of the countries to recover from the war. A Chinese who wants a house will not wait while half a dozen permanent departments wrangle over what kind of house he is to have, where it is to be built, and who shall build it. Het will run up a bamboo matshed, and when times improve will build himself something better. That is but one example of how Chinese industriousness and their habit of doing things for themselves instead of waiting on the slow decisions of bureaucracy will help to a quick national recovery!
