RAILWAY SERVICE

DEPARTMENTAL HOLIDAYS CLAIMS FOR TWO EXTRA DAYS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. The addition of Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to the existing departmental holidays was asked by the A.S.R.S. at to-day’s sitting of the Railway Tribunal. It was contended that, compared with workers generally, the railway employees were at a decided disadvantage in regard to departmental holidays. The granting of the claim would promote contentment and improve industrial relations, said the general secretary, Mr L. Mcllvride. In reply, Mr K. G. Reid, representing the department, ppinted out that the department had to provide extensive passenger services on those days, as on most of the existing departmental holidays. Working on public holidays was incidental to the occupation of many railwaymen. The Tradesmen's Association and the Officers’ Institute had also lodged claims to the two extra days. . . Mr Reid referred to the provision for extra payment to employees required to work on departmental holidays, and said that granting 'the claim would cost approximately £42,240 in respect to the A.S.R.S. and the R.T.A., and approximately £49.315 in the case of all second division employees.
