SHIP BUILDING
ADDITIONAL CONTRACTS CONSTRUCTION OF TOWBOATS Mr James Fletcher, Controller of Shipbuilding, who is visiting Dunedin, informed a Daily Times reporter last night that contracts had been received for an additional 24 towboats similar to those which were recently completed in the Auckland yards. This new contract will be carried out in various yards in Auckland, and delivery of the vessels is required by March 1 next. Mr Fletcher said that this work, together with the work on the cargo vessels at present under construction, would keep all the shipbuilding yards fully occupied until May of next year. It was expected that contracts for the construction of steel cargo vessels for use outside New Zealand would be arranged to permit of continuity of work for a further 12 months.
Mr Fletcher said that arrangements had been made to speed up the Port Chalmers programme of four cargo vessels, and 12 specialists would ;leave Auckland for the south on Tuesday. Arrangements were also being made to obtain the services of further specialists to come south. As a result of these men being made available. he added, an increased number of local tradesmen would require to be employed.
