BLAZING FIRE-POTS
HEAVY COST TO ORCHARDISTS The thousands of fire-pots which were lit on Friday night to combat the heavy frost (writes our Alexandra correspondent) provided'a spectacular scene. Following a day of very cold conditions with a strong southerly wind, the weather cleared. The wind dropped and by 10 pan. the temperature in certain areas was 28 degrees Fahr. By this time a number of orchardists had lit their fire-pots for what was to prove the longest “ burn ” they have ever maintained. As the pots had been lit so early it was necessary to refill them twice during the night. In some cases 10 acres of orchard were brilliantly illuminated by the blaze of the burning oil.
The minimum temperature recorded in the district was 19 degs. Fahr. It is as yet too early to assess the full extent of the damage, but it can be stated definitely that orchardists without fire-pots and backyard orchards suffered severely. The cost of this “burn” was very heavy, in some cases amounting to over £IOO for the night. On Saturday housewives spent a busy day clearing away the covering of smut deposited by the thick black pall of smoke from the blazing fire-pots.
