ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

The annual meeting of the St. John Women’s War Committee was held at the headquarters on Tuesday. There were present—Mrs A. A. Fairbalrn (in the chair), Mesdames A. G. Melville, F. Edmond, G. Barclay, D. Smeaton, E. Halsted, R.

Fulton, H. L. Paterson, W. Ewing, H. K. Wilkinson, O. J. Begg, and Miss E. L, Applegarth. The annual report, which was presented by the secretary, gave a resume cf the work for the past 18 mon'hs. During the earlier part of that period orders were large and urgent, but in later months less had been required. The hope was expressed that this would prove to be the last annual report of the work as a war committee. No praise was too hirh for the large band of women who had willingly, assisted the committee. The following list demonstrates the large and varied amount of work that has gone forward to Joint Council Headquarters during the past 18 months:— Bandages: Fifty T, 145 many-tailed, 24 stump, 6 hood, 12 head, 1239 roller bandages, 805 swabs, 1563' pads, 1982 dvsentery pads, 4 glovr bags, 139 dressing gowns, 215 pairs of pyjamas, 934 handkerchiefs. 827 face cloths, 57 flannel shirts, 77 bed pan driers, 16 plaster toe caps, 24 knit fed eye bandages. Knitted goods: Four hundred and nineteen pairs of socks, 207 sleeveless pullovers, 57 long-sleeved pullovers, 42 cardigans, 6 scarves. Women’s Transport Division.—The annual re-examinatlon of the division was held at headquarters last Thursday evening There was a good attendance of members at a recent meeting of the division, when Dr McAlister gave an interes ing address on “ Head and Brain Cavell Nursing Division. The division paraded at headquarters on Tuesday evening for the annual inspection-by officers of the district and corps s^ s - The officer in charge of th f. strI < f n t lp c n O i?J plimented members on their splendid turnout. Members of all nursing divisions are at present busy practising for the annual competitions, which will be held ° n S ewlnpMGuild-—The St. John Ambulance Sewing Guild held its annual meeting on Monday afternoon. Mrs Barclay was in the chair. The report showed that although owing to war conditions no flannelette had been available for the last two years to replenish stocks i° r ambulance nurses in their work among the sick poor they were still able to supply needy cases from a small quantity of garments held from a previous year.- As the guild was unable to continue its usual activities, work this year was wholly for patriotic purposes, and as a rpciiit articles of clothing and 11 Quilts were forwarded to the Lady Galway Fund, 154 face clothes and 3 skull caps to the Otago Patriotic, and a quantity of bandages was made for the Hospital. The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mrs Barclay- vice-presidents, Mesdames L. Sanderson and V. Collier: hon. secretary, Miss M. Watson; assistant secretary, Mrs W. L. Portman; committee —Mesdames W. Bovyling, S. F. Aburn, J. F. Moodie and Miss Daniels.
