WALCHEREN ISLAND

6000 ENEMY TROOPS TRAPPED » FATE OF OTHERS UNKNOWN LONDON, Oct. 4. At least 6000 German troops garrisoned on Walcheren Island have been trapped in floods caused by enemy air attacks, says Berlin radio. A considerable proportion of the trapped men are in the town of Middleburg. The fate of 3000 Germans who attempted to reach the safety of Flushing in small boats is uncertain. Reuter’s correspondent at First Canadian Army headquarters says that air photographs show the sea to be flowing freely through the gap made by the R.A.F. in the dyke.
