Mr W. R. Clarke left for Wellington by the express yesterday. Mr James Begg was a passenger for the north by the express yesterday. Cabled advice has been received by Mrs A. Stewart, of Pukehiki, that her son. Flight Sergeant George Stewart has received his commission In England. Inspector E. T. C. Turner, of the Central Police Station, left for Auckland yesterday. During his absence on leave his duties will be carried out by Inspector W. E. Packer, of Christchurch. Mr W. P. Newton, of Wellington, is to succeed Mr J. B. Stewart as manager of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia. Mr Stewart has been appointed manager of the Auckland branch. Professor H. B. Kirk has resigned the position of chairman of the Examining Board of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture,, on account of health reasons. The death of Mr P. L. Ritchie, an honorary life member of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association, was referred to at the fortnightly meeting of the committee of the association last night. As a tribute to his memory members stood in silence. A group of well-wishers, including the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) and a number of business men in the city, assembled at the station yesterday to say farewell to Mr and Mrs James Brown, who are to take up residence in Auckland. As the train pulled out cheers, were given and they were accorded musical honours. Mr M. Sullivan has been appointed Assistant Director of Rehabilitation. Mr Sullivan, who is a qualified accountant, joined the Public Service in 1919, being appointed to the Public Trust Office, in which he worked at head office and various branches on accounts and administration. He served in the Middle East with the 14th Light Anti-aircraft Regiment for two and a-half years. After returning to New Zealand last year Mr Sullivan was for a time with the Public Trust Office, being later transferred to the Rehabilitation Department as chief clerk.
