RACING NEWS
By Sentinel ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT ••Wager'" Port Chalmers.—(l) R. PRegister. (2) Silver Streak finished third to Cerne Abbas and Wild Chase in the New Zealand Cup of 1937.
The Wingatui track has been receiving attention , since the Otago Hunt Club s m Find on- has been entered for the Harcourt Stakes, to be run over 11 furlongs at weight-for-age at the Wellington spring meeting. . . . It is reported that Sir Percy got his tongue over the bit when running in the Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase. The late Mr T. H., Lowry’s horses in training will be sold under the hammer at Trentham prior to the commencement of the first day’s racing. , m , Sal’s Pal, Kevin, Fair Trial, and Tring are the favourites for the Ranfurly Handicap, and High Play for the Telegraph Handicap. , , • . . Two-year-olds engaged at Wingatui who have been nominated for the Wellington meeting are Gold Spur, Douglas Haig, Belle Leonne, Princess Anne, Montezuma, Erins Pal, Deep Harmony, and Racilla. The McLean Stakes candidate Princess Anne is a sister to My Bonnie, the winner of the Avondale Guineas. .My Bonnie won three times and ran second in her last four of five starts as a two-year-old. Princess Anne is built on speedy lines. There is not much between John Gay and John o’ London. Over seven furlongs at Ashburton John Gay beat John o’ London by a head in lmin 25 l-ssec. John o’ London meets John Gay on 41b better terms over six furlongs at Wingatui. The Novice Handicap to be run at the Gore spring meeting, is for hordes that have never <wOn a race at a totalisator meeting. Several of those engaged in the Novice Handicap to be run at Wingatui are engaged at Gore, and the question has arisen whether the winner to-morrow remains eligible for the Gore race. Strictly speaking, the winner of the Wingatui race should not be ineligible for the Gore race. Tring gave evidence of stamina when he won the Otaio Hack Plate, run at the New Zealand Cup meeting. He won with 8.2, and won well at the end of a mile and a-half in 2min 34sec. On the same day Gladynev 8.10 won the Metropolitan Handicap in 2min 31 4-ssec by a head from Palfrey 7.4, The Monarch 7.12, Macedoine 8.7, and eight others, including Classform 8.1, who won the New Zealand Cup with 7.1. The race for the McLean Stakes tomorrow promises to be the best contest since the classic was included in a Wingatui programme. The track work of the various candidates has created a widespread opinion about the result. In the field likely to go to the post positions at the barrier will be a matter of importance. Of those who have been seen at Wingatui, Racilla. Psalm, Gold Spur. Western Front, Major Argosy, l Knight Crusader. Eudora, Superlative, Sword Dance, and Victory Flight all look well forward in condition. Montezuma and Princess Anne were booked to arrive yesterday, and they have been shaping well in their preparation. The winner may come from Psalm, Gold Spur, Major Argosy, and Racilla.
