STANDARD TYPES
HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE NEW SPECIFICATIONS A standard specification for household furniture has been issued by the New Zealand Standards Institute, which establishes minimum requirements in quality. The specification is being issued as an emergency standard for three months, at the expiration of which it will be revised and amended, if necessary, before it is endorsed as a regular standard specification. The provisions of the new specification were formulated by a committee representing manufacturers, retailers, workers, women’s organisations, returned servicemen, and the appropriate Government authorities, and, according to an announcement by the Standards Institute, all these interests have endorsed the specifications. Provision is made for the classification' and marking of furniture to assist the purchaser in comparing reliably the class and quality. Furniture supplied to exservicemen against advances by the rehabilitation authorities must bear the standard mark. Returned men will thus be assured that they received full value. The specification establishes minimum requirements in respect of the class and" grade of timber, upholstery and other materials, basic construction, such as timber dimensions and methods of jointing, workmanship, finish, and other factors which affect quality. It is emphasised by the institute that the specification in no way restricts style, design, or the expression of other aesthetic values.
