CITY TRANSPORT CONTROL
Sir,—The city transport system is fast becoming a greater responsibility and far exceeds the capacity of the committee to control its operations. Problems arise which require expert knowledge In handling, and unfortunately none of the committee members have the requisite training. Transport has been the cause of endless discussions by the City Council. The tragedy of the control is the fact that there are no transport experts on the City Council. Consequently certain councillors, primed with information given from outside, pester the chairman with questions which he does his best to explain. I think the time has arrived when the transport system should be handed over to a board of transport. This would relieve the council of all fortnightly discussions and release the service from local party politics. The history, of the system during the past few years shows that one chairman got “ fed up ” and resigned, another lost his seat at the last election, and the present chairman is being heckled to such an extent that he will follow the other two in course of time. To be chairman of transport is a full-time job, and a most thankless task. A board of three members with transport knowledge would make a job of it.—l am, etc., August 30. Progress.
