REFERENDUM MEASURE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT TO MEET (N.Z.P.A, Special Aust. Correspondent) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 16. The Federal Parliament will meet in Canberra to-morrow for a brief sitting, probably lasting only until the end of the week. The main business of the session is to hear the report of the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, on his mission abroad.
Opposition members, however, are expected to seize the opportunity for sharp criticisms on the forthcoming referendum issues. As a counter-mea-sure, the Ministers are likely to announce several proposals calculated to offer a strong appeal to the public to support the referendum. It will be stressed that to implement. those proposals the Government will need an extension of its war-time powers. Parliament will be opened by the Governor-General. Lord Gowrie, who will be making one of his last official appearances before returning to England. No official announcement has been made of when the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will arrive to take up office.
