LIQUOR IN DANCE HALL

PROPRIETOR FINED £4O (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 15. Fines totalling £4O were imposed upon Cecil Berry Paterson, owner-pro-prietor of El Rey Country Club, by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. The defendant was before the court on two charges of permitting liquor to be consumed at a dance hall, two of permitting liquor to be consumed in a restaurant, and two of keeping the premises as a place of resort for the consumption of intoxicating liquor. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges. For the defendant, it was stated that Paterson had no knowledge that there was liquor on the premises. Any liquor found by the police was smuggled in through the windows by patrons. Mr Luxford dismissed the charges of keeping the premises as a place of resort, and imposed fines on the charges of permitting liquor in a dance hall. The defendant was convicted and discharged on the charges of permitting liquor to be in a restaurant.
