GENEROUS PROPOSALS

HOSPITAL BENEFITS SCHEME NEW AUSTRALIAN MEASURE (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 15. The Commonwealth is to pay 6s a day to the States for all patients in public hospital wards. This measure is included in a generous Hospital Benefits’ Scheme to be submitted to the State Governments.

The payments will be made on condition that the States agree to suspend the means test in the Hospital Act so that every person will have the right to a public ward bed without charge. The Federal Government will also pay 6s a day for patients in private hospitals and in private wards of public hospitals as a contribution towards their expenses. The estimated cost of this benefit is £4,400,000 a year. The Commonwealth will also subsidise the campaign against tuberculosis on a £1 for a £1 basis with the States.
