SPECTACULAR FIRE
EGG FLOOR PREMISES MAIN STORES SAVED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, July A. A spectacular fire swept through the second and third floors of a large store on the premises of Central Egg Floor, Ltd., Tuam street, shortly before 9 o’clock to-night. For more than an hour/ the Christchurch Fire Brigade fought the blaze, which sent columns of smoke clouds high over the adjoin-, ing buildings. The fire was conpned to the top floors, which contained crates- of packing material, and did not reach the ground floor, where tliere were 187 dozen eggs, about £SO worth of bacon and cheese, and two egg grading machines. The main store in the rear of the premises, which was untouched, contained several thousand dozen eggs, and also the main grading and 'stamping machinery. Firemen first entered the building, but were driven back by the flames. They then concentrated water from five leads of hose through the windows of, the top floors. The /chairman of directors, Mr C. Ferguson, said the building and its contents were fully covered by insurance. The egg floor would be able to carry on to-morrow the receiving and distributing of eggs.
