FIGHTING IN CHINA ENEMY USES GAS SHELLS (Rec. 8 p.m.) CHUNGKING, July 3. A Chinese communique indicates that Japanese troops which by-passed Hengyang have thrust a spearhead 46 miles below the city in a drive to capture the entire Canton-Hankow railway route. The Japanese by-passed Leiyang, 37 miles south-east of Hengyang, says the United Press. The supplementary Chinese communique reports that the Japanese at Hengyang on Saturday resorted to the continuous use of poison gas shells, and many of t>e Chinese defenders lost consciousness. The Chinese maim rapid progress in a counter-attack towards Siangtan. The Associated Press says China's chief hope is in halting the Japanese surge to the south by such attacks against lengthening supply lines.
