Evidence advocating wider powers for local governments will be collected by a special committee elected by the representatives of 21 county councils in Canterbury at a meeting held in Christchurch a few days ago. More than 40, delegates met to protest against the Government’s action in setting up a parliamentary, committee, to consider, and report on local government, the meeting supporting the request of the New Zealand Counties Association for a Royal Commission to deal with the matter. Opposition to coercion in bringing about the amalgamation of counties was also expressed. The conference, which was called by the Canterbury Progress League at the request of the local bodies concerned, was held in committe*.
