MAIL CENSORSHIP
INQUIRY IN AUSTRALIA
(Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, June 15. Continuation of the present system of post and telegraph censorship for national security purposes is recommended by the Parliamentary Committee on the Communications Censorship in its interim report to the Federal Government. Releasing the report, the Acting Prime Minister, Mr F. M. Forde. said it would be distributed to all the interested departments for comment.
Suggestions made by the committee include: —(1) That the censorship should not be used as a means of policing minor offences against rationing and other regulations. (2) That where extracts are taken from communications which are deemed to be of value to the war effort the addressee or the sender should as a general rule be notified promptly of the extent to which the information has been supplied to the Government department interested. The report states that the inquiries so far have been confined mainly to the mail aspects of the censorship. The report is submitted to enable the Government to inform and relieve the public mind and tender assurances that certain practices will cease.
