REMARKABLE RESULTS

SYDNEY HOSPITAL CASES (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 15. Great success has been achieved m Sydney Hospital in the first mass treatment of' civilian patients with penicillin. Announcing results to-day, the medical superintendent, Dr L. C. Dunlop, said that a total of 5,300,000 units had been used as a last resort on seven patients suffering from very serious complaints. Where the sulphonamide drugs and other forms of treatment had failed to arrest the complaints, penicillin had brought an astonishing improvement. Examples of the healing powers of penicillin included a case where hope of saving the life of a man suffering from acute osteomyelitis was aimost abandoned. Following the use of penicillin his condition showed a rapid improvement and there are now excellent prospects of his complete recovery. In another case a woman who was in a critical condition as the result of advancing pneumonia has been cured and discharged. In a third ease a boy with a compound fracture of the elbow, which was infected with gas-forming organisms, has shown considerable improvement and a cure is expected.
