PENINSULA COUNTY
ANNUAL MEETING OF COUNCIL At the annual meeting of the Peninsula County Council yesterday Mr J. Hellyer was elected chairman for the ensuing term. Others present at the meeting were—Crs D. Rutherford. J. W. Harbrow, R. W. Aitken, T. S. Edmonds, R. G. Habershon, T. Aitken, W. V. Sturmer, and M. Geary. At the ordinary meeting, winch followed, the,estimates for the current year were approved, and it was decided that the following rates be struck (last year's rates are shown in parentheses):—General rate, ljd in the £1 for Otago Heads, Sandymount, Highcliff, Tomahawk, Broad Bay, North-East Harbour (all ljd), and Portobello (13d); special lighting rate, jd (id) in the £1; special areas—NorthEast Harbour, Broad Bay, Tomahawk, and Portobello, id (id) in the *£l; Helensburgh Township special works rate, id (id) in the £l. Accounts amounting t:> £467 16s 8d were passed for payment, and it was reported that there was a credit balance of £1719 9s 3d in the bank. A deputation was received from the Tomahawk Amenities Society requesting the completion of a footpath at Tomahawk from the hall to the school.—lt was decided to accede to the society’s request. , It was decided that the council should become a member of the Otago and Southland Counties’ Association. A letter from the Dunedin Junior Chamber of Commerce with respect to the Centennial Memorial, asking for the council’s opinion on the manner in which the quota (£250,000) should be expended, was discussed at lehgth.—lt was decided to hold the matter over till the next meeting.
