OBITUARY

MR A. A. cbRRIGAN

The death occurred at Wellington last week' of Mr A. A. Corrigan, who was 'formerly a well-known resident of Dunedin. He was the son of an army officer, and was born in Tipperary in 1860. His early years were spent in Ireland, Canada and the West Indies, and when he came to Dunedin he held a responsible position in the D.I.C. In the early nineties he was transferred to Wellington as the company’s manager there, but resigned this position in 1912 to enter into business on his own account. A keen volunteer, he served with the Navals in Dunedin, and was later O.C. of the Zealandia Rifles in Wellington. Under the territorial scheme at one time he was officer commanding the Fifth Wellington Regiment. He served in the Great War, helping to form the Royal Naval Division, and saw service in France and Belgium in 1914, gaining the 1914 Star. He was invalided back to New Zealand in 1915, and later served on the staff as O.C. of Group Area 5. He was a director of Sharland and Co,, Ltd., and managing trustee of the Martin Kennedy estate. He is survived by three sons and one daughter.

MR JAMES H. CRAWFORD

Mr James Crawford, whose death occurred on Saturday, was the son of Mr and Mrs George Crawford, and was born in Port Chalmers. He received his education at ..the Port Chalmers District High School, of which he was dux in 1883. He took up clerical work /in connection with shipping, and in 1897 he joined the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, holding the position of chief stevedore for many years In his younger days Mr Crawford was one of the most efficient artillery officers in Otago. He was a member of the Port Chalmers Navals and the No. 2 Company of the Garrison Artillery, and during this period he was decorated with the officer's medal and medals for long and honourable service. He was at one time a member of the Borough Council.

Mr Crawford took a keen interest in sporting activities. He was a foundation member of the Port Chalmers Football . Club, secretary for many years, a past president and a life member. He had been secretary, captain, president, and a life member of the Port Chalmers Cricket Club, and he was for a time a member of the executive of the Otago Cricket Association. He was one of the earliest members of the Queen's Drive Boating Club, and here again his work was recognised by his election as a life member. He was a member of the Otago Rowing Association for a long period, and gave valuable service as secretary. As a member of the Port Chalmers Bowling Club he held the office of president on three occasions. He was instrumental in the formation of the Port Chalmers Golf Club, and his name appears on the championship roll on a number of occasions. He also occupied the positions of captain and president, and his outstanding services were again recognised by the honour of life membership. Fifty-six years ago he joined the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge of Oddfellows, and he served iff all the offices, becoming a past grand master in 1891, following which he became auditor and trustee of the lodge till his death. He was elected to the Otago District, and held the office of provincial grand master in 1908.

Mr Crawford was a member of the Congregational Church, of which he had been a deacon for many years He Is survived by his wife, a granddaughter of David Carey, who, with " Johnny ’’ Jones, settled in Waikouaiti in 1840.
