PATIENT'S LIFE SAVED

(Special) AUCKLAND, June 13. The penicillin treatment has been used for the first time in the Whangarei Hospital. A middle-aged man was desperately ill through blood poisoning, and as ordinary treatment had failed the medical superintendent. Dr W J. Hall, decided to administer penicillin. The first treatment was carried out on June 5, the drug having been secured from Auckland. The treatment was continued fpr five days, and now the patient’s condition is most satisfactory. ... ■ ... Dr Hall stated that without this treatment the patient would probably have died. It was only in serious cases that the treatment could be carried out, owing to the shortage of penicillin and also the cost. The treatment for the one patient is costing £6O.
