Mr S. C. Bingham, the newly-appointed district man-power officer, tock up his duties yesterday. Messrs V. S. Jacobs, C. J. Hayward, and C. B. Smith left yesterday for Wellington to attend a conference of the Discharged Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League.
Messrs A. Campbell and M. Connelly, members of the Legislative Council, and Messrs J. W. Munro, P. G. Connolly, and P. Neilson, members of Parliament, left for Wellington yesterday to attend a caucus of the Parliamentary Labour Party.
Captain W. R. Williams, who has been well known on the New Zealand coast for many years, has been appointed to succeed Captain F. A. Macindoe as general, secretary of the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild. Captain Williams has in recent years been master of the coastal ship Storm. Reference to the death of Mr Jackson Purdie was made by the president (Mr H. S. Reid) at the meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Otago) last night, Mr Reid stating that Mr Purdie had given valuable .service to the association as an executive member for a considerable number of year. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed.
The appointment of Father Victor Foley, S.M., Suva, as Vicar Apostolic of Fiji, has been announced. He will succeed the late Bishop Nicolaus. The bishop-elect was born near Folkestone, Kent, in 1909, and educated at St. Mary’s College, Dundalk. He gained his B.Sc. at University College, Dublin, and spent his novitiate in Lyons (France) and Differt (Belgium). Ho was ordained at Plymouth in June. 1936, and arrived in Suva in January, 1937. He visited Auckland on a health trip this year. Passengers who left, for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr J. W. Young and Mr W. Barber for Christchurch, Miss V. Wilson, Mr J. F. Fraser, Mr H. Brown, Mr J. Gray, Mr W. A. Slowley, and Mr R. P. Fraser for Wellington, Miss M. Allen and Mr N. H. Biair for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr J. D. Foote, Mr R. Abbott, and Mr W. Pascce from Auckland, Mrs M. Penn and Mrs G. Barnes from Palmerston North, Mr Yiavacls, Mr Fitzgerald, Mr B. G. S'ephens, and Mr U. R. Williams from Wellington, and Mr Smillie from Christchurch.
