THE BATTLESHIP

Sir,—An American admiral recently stated that the battleship was worth its weight in gold. This recalls to mind the bitter controversy between Admirals bcott and Fisher over 20 years ago concerning the value of capital ships as against the speedier and smaller vessels. Fortunately the former have not been done away with, as their value has been fully exhibited in this war by the destruction worked by their large calibre shells. It was in the South African war that Admiral Scott’s invention of a gun carriage enabled 6-inch and 4.7-inch guns to be used with great effect. In that war the magnificent aid given by the guns of H.M.S. Powerful was noticeable.—l^am, Ti'maru, June 12.
