NEW ZEALAND SAPPERS
- DANGER FROM TIME-BOMBS (N.Z.E.F. Official War Correspondent) (Rec. 7 p.m.) BALSORANO, June 11. New Zealand patrols have found Avezzano ana • Calano free of the enemy. Avezzano is an important town at the junction of Highway 82 and the Pescara-Rome lateral road, while Celano lies about eight miles to the north-east.
Our sappers have been working day and night on more demolitions than I have ever seen on one stretch of road. Not only bridges, but whole hillsides have been blasted into the valley. It has been an uncomfortable time for many of the sappers, as twice already, after-a lapse of several days since the enemy’s withdrawal, time bombs have exploded at points on the road behind where they have been working. Slight casualties have been caused by falling rock.
There is much evidence of the effect of our bombing on the enemy’s communications. Great craters in places have destroyed all evidence of the original road. The Germans had effected hasty repairs, which our engineers are now improving.
