ENDOWMENT FUND
ASSISTANCE FOR GIRLS A GENEROUS BEQUEST (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 3. Girls whose fathers die in the war or as the result of war service are to benefit under the will of Mrs Mary Ann Cowan, of Christchurch. This was stated in a letter from the solicitors to the estate which was read at a meeting of .the Technical College Board of Governors. Mrs Cowan directed that the residue of her estate, amounting to £BISO, should be set aside as a fund to be known as the Cowan and Mallett Endowment Fund. The income from this fund is to be used in the first place to help the daughters of deceased servicemen who are in training as nurses at the Christchurch Hospital. It is intended to help them in paying their fees, buying the necessary outfits and books, and generally to assist them in obtaining necessaries for their nursing career. Should there be too few -such girls, the income is to be used to provide scholarships or grants-in-aid to girls attending any State high or technical school in or near Christchurch. A condition of the bequest is that a girl who receives help must be a Protestant. The solicitors advised that income from the fund was now becoming available, but at present it was thought that the whole or greater part of the income would be absorbed by nurses in training. They added that as the income became available the trustees would consult the board on the subject of scholarships for girls at the Christchurch Technical School. The board decided to refer the letter to its Finance Committee.
