AMERICAN BOMBERS

RAIDS IN CENTRAL PACIFIC (Rec. 1 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 2. Widespread operations by United States bombers against Japanese-held islands in the Central Pacific are reported in a Pacific Fleet communique. Army Liberators last Sunday bombed Guam Island in daylight Approximately 10 enemy fighter’s attempted interception, and one was shot down. Wake Island was bombed last Tuesday by army Liberators, which hit Peacock anc Wilkes Islands and Heel Point. On the same day army Mitchells raided Ponape Island, hitting gun positions, runways, and defence installations. Interception was not attempted. Army Liberators on Tuesday night attacked Truk atoll, hitting airstrips and starting fires visible 150 miles away. Navy and marine bombers and fighters bombed and strafed enemy positions in the Marshalls, hitting blockhouses, barracks, and coastal guns. All the planes returned from these operations.
