MILITARY CROSS

IMMEDIATE AWARD FOR GALLANT SERVICE Second-lieutenant S. M. F. Martin, who has received the immediate award ol the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished service in Italy, is the only son of Mr and Mrs M. Martin, of Thames. He had a brilliant record at

the Thames School of Mines, gaining the coveted Bruce Medal and a mining scholarship admitting him to the Otago University. Two years ago he graduated at the School of Mines, Otago University, and last year was admitted as a member of the Australian Mining Institute.

While in Egypt, Lieutenant Martin had the honour of being invited to address the Egyptian Geological Society. His wife is a daughter of Mr and Mrs J. N. Thompson, of 40 Grove street, St. Kilda.
