COMMUNITY CENTRE
£6OOO PROJECT FOR WAKARI
Plans are being made by the residents of Wakari for the erection in the near future of an up-to-date community centre. The land and buildings, which are expected to entail an expenditure of approximately ££ooo, will be ideally and centrally situated to serve a variety of purposes. The proposed building will be of two storeys and in it will be incorporated a kindergarten on the most modern lines, Plunket rooms, a hall to accommodate some 500 persons, with a properly constructed stage for plays and drama, and a dance floor. The plans also provide for a reading room, a lounge, library, and smoke-room, as well as a specially constructed- compartment for the use of all returned servicemen. All youth activities of the district will be concentrated at the cenre, the grounds of which will be tastefully laid out in lawns and gardens. , Although the whole project is an ambitious one, there are expectations that the necessary funds will be raised within a reasonable period, and various committees have been appointed for this purpose. Several prominent business firms which have been approached have signified their intention of making substantial donations. The residents of Wakari are enthusiastic concerning the proposed centre, which they hope to make the most comprehensive and modern of its kind in the Dominion. The initial step in the raising of funds wll be the holding of a concert and dance in the Wakari Hall on Thursday, June 15.
