INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES

THE STOPPAGE OF WESTFIELD BEEF FLOOR REMAINS IDLE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 2. No progress towards a settlement of the dispute between the beef shacklers and the management of the Westfield freezing works on the question of wages was made to-day. and no work was done on the beef slaughtering floor throughout the day. This is the fourth full day lost in the department this week, resulting in a hold-up of the disposal of about 3000 beef cattle. The negotiations between the men and the management having failed over the previous days, the Wage Commissioner, Mr C. L. Hunter, addressed the men this morning and conferred with officials of the works. His appeal to the men to return to work while the negotiations were resumed was rejected, and after discussions lasting about two hours the men dispersed to their homes.

Suggestions that a full meeting of all the workers be held at the lunch hour were not carried out, and operations proceeded without interruption in all the other branches. There will be practically no work done in any of the dtepartments to-morrow, although operations are usually conducted on Saturday mornings. The ,delivery of beef cattle to the works has been suspended. Consignments of other stock have been tapered off in view of the general holiday on Monday.
