The robin was once plentiful in the Okuru district of Westland, says B’orest and Bird, but many years ago a large number of settlers arrived, and when they left some time later a number of cats were left behind. These cat's became wild and played havoc with the birds of. the bush. To-day the descendants of these cats abound in the district.
