FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS WASHINGTON, Apl. 17. American bombers continue to pound Japanese Pacific bases. A Pacific fleet communique says Liberators dropped 38 tons of bombs on Dubldn, Fefan, and Moen Islands, in the Truk atoll, before dawn yesterday. Fires and explosions were observed. Two Liberators from this force bombed the airfield, and two attacked Ponape. Single planes on Saturday bombed Pakin, Ulul, and Ant Islands. Other bombers and fighters bombed gun positions and barracks and strafed two small craft in enemy-held Marshall atolls. Fiji Islanders, armed with automatic weapons, are fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific, says a War Department statement. Fierce warriors led by New Zealand officers penetrated deeply into enemy territory in the Bougainville area.and killed 179 Japanese. According to the statement only one Fijian was killed and three wounded.
