RETAILERS’ DECISION

EXPLANATION BY SECRETARY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Apl. 18. “The decision arrived at by the recent conference of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation was not reached without very careful consideration of all the relevant factors, prominent among them being the' staff shortages and the present stock position,” said Mr G. L. Riley, secretary of the federation, commenting on the criticism by the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation of the resolution recommending favourable consideration to the introduction of a five-day 43-hour week. The resolution carried. Mr Riley said, provided means for exploring the question of a five-day week with the necessary overlap of shopping hours for those 'workers who were unable to shop during the day. It was proposed that the 43-hour week should be worked on extended hours during five days of the week, with a late shopping night, and should provide the same overlap as was enjoyed before the coming into force of the five-day week.
