MR HENRY T. SILCOCK

AUTHORITY ON CHINESE AFFAIRS Mr Henry T. Silcock, M.A., formerly professor of education at the,West China Union University, Chengtu, arrived ip New Zealand on Saturday, April 8, on his way to England from Chungking, the capital of Free China. Mr Silcock has been in close touch with the political life of Chungking, in which city he has helped to set up an international centre on behalf - of the Quakers of Britain and America, besides assisting in the work ‘of the Friends’ Ambulance Unit in China. After working for some years in the West China University, Mr Silcock returned to England, where he was director and adviser to Chinese students under tl*s Universities’ China Committee in London. He also became honorary secretary of that committee and of the China Society. He was at the head of the Quaker international organisation, the Friends’ Service Council, and for a time he was travelling secretary fcr the Student Christian Movement. He returned to China some years ago to found an International centre under Quaker auspices at Changhai, but left the seaport for Chungking after the Japanese Invasion. Mr Silcock. who is the author of "Christ and the World’s Unrest.” is expected to reach Dunedin on Thursday. Arrangements have been made for him to deliver addresses to interested organisations, and a public meeting will be held in the Pioneer Women’s Hall on Friday night.
