WET WEATHER ROUTE

DUNEDIN-LAWRENCE ROAD CITY COUNCIL'S CONTRIBUTION The Electricity Committee will report to the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night that representations have been received from the Automobile Association (Otago) relative to the gravelling of the clay portion of the Dunedin-Outram-Lawrence road through the district of the Taieri County Council. The remainder of the road, controlled by the Tuapeka County Council, has already been gravelled and can be used in wet weather.

In support of its representations the association stressed the need of this alternative route when the main road to Lawrence via Milton was impassable in the winter owing to floods. The association had approached the Taieri County Council in the matter, but that body advised that the work required would be of little benefit to its ratepayers, and suggested that the Dunedin City Council, as the principal user of the road, should subsidise any expenditure. The cost of gravelling the portion concerned wps estimated at £ISOO. The road provided, access to the plantations on the north side of Lake Mahinc-rangi, and the gravelling proposed would be of advantage to the Electricity Department. The committee will recommend that the Taieri County Council be advised that the council is prepared to make a contribution of one-third of the cost of the necessary work up to a maximum of £SOO.
