THE AUTHOR IN NEW ZEALAND
Literature
Literature and Authorship in New Zealand. By Alan Mulgan. (Allen and Unwin.) 3s. Mr Mulgan’s contribution to the “P.E.N Books,” which are the work of eminent writers and critics, sketches with ample and nicely-chosen quotation the course of literary development in this country. If there is a complaint to be made, it is the author s generosity in the comprehensiveness of his choice of contemporary writers considered worthy of mention and his
forbearance from critical evaluation. But while so very much of which, he speaks might, inferentially, be taken as good, which is at best mediocre, he is less sparing in his general judgment. To Mr Holcroft’s conjecturings upon the influence of the bush on New Zealanders Mr Mulgan adds the interesting suggestion “that there may be peril in the very beauty of our land. We have so much of beauty about us . . . that our aesthetic _ sense may become satiated. It is a mistaken idea that wonderful scenery must produce art.” This is an excellent little book for the purposes either of reference or information.
