BEST USE OF MAN-POWER
PURPOSE OF MISSION Some of the reasons for his present visit to ..England were given by Mr Nash in a broadcast from London. Mr Nash said his work in Britain had been based on New Zealand’s desire to decide what further steps could be taken to ensure that the Dominion’s war effort was the best and most useful that could possibly be put forward. “New Zealand’s available resources include two which are particularly outstanding ” Mr Nash said. “ First there are her armed forces for the fighting fronts, and, secondly, there are her foodstuffs, notably meat, butter, and cheese. The question now arises as to which of these two weapons of war is the most important at this stage of operations. Should we start producing more food or send more men overseas? ”
Another thing the New Zealand Government wanted to talk over with the British Government was the disparities which existed between import and export prices. It was common knowledge that New Zealand had been able to keep down the price of goods she sold to the United Kingdom to a considerably greater degree than the United Kingdom had kept down the prices of goods New Zealand bought from Britain. This meant a disparity was created in the values of the two countries’ mutual trading. Mr Nash said he had been negotiating for an adjustment which it was hoped would be fair to both countries.
