FARM PRODUCE

PRICES AND OUTPUT NEGOTIATIONS STILL IN PROGRESS (F.0.P.R.) • WELLINGTON, Apl. 4. An endeavour to have a discussion on the Government’s plans for increased primary production was made by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, in the House of Representatives early this morning following the passing of the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill. He suggested that this could be taken when the House resumed at 2.30 p.m. to await the passing of the Bill by the Legislative Council.

The Opposition desired that there should be a frank and free discussion, said Mr Holland. He understood that arrangements were practically completed for the announcement of a new price for the produce of the dairy and pig farmers. It was right and proper to have that discussion. The Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, said that the arrangements were not far enough advanced for a debate. The Government would announce its decisions in due course. In the meantime, matters had to be further discussed with the representatives of the industry. The negotiations had been carried on in confidence, and he was not going to say anything until the time came for the complete announcement.
