ECONOMIC PLANNING

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S AIM HIGH LEVEL OF EMPLOYMENT (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Mar. 30. While other countries were restoring their primary industries after the war, the Australians might look forward to prices perhaps unreasonably high. But this period of high prices must not be allowed to affect land values, so that soldier settlers or others who required land were burdened with excessive costs. This was stated by the Director of Post-war Reconstruction, Dr W. E. Coombs, when addressing a United Country Party conference. He told the conference that Government economic planning was aimed at providing a high and stable level of employment. In his opinion it was legitimate and proper to pay subsidies to assist producers when the economic conditions of their industry were bad enough to impose hardship, but subsidies should be for short terms only.
