CASTLE STREET LINE
"VEXATIOUS DELAYS” . TELEGRAM TO PRIME MINISTER The Mayor, Mr A. H. Allen, said yesterday that, following the criticism at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night of the delay in issuing the required Order-in-Council authorising the closing of the Castle street tramline, a telegram had been sent to the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, asking him to take steps to see that the order was issued. The telegram was as follows:
“The Dunedin City Council is unable to understand the reason for the vexatious delays in the granting of the application to amend the Tramway Order-in-Council so as to authorise the closing of the Castle street tramway. All the statutory requirements were duly complied with by the council, and the application was sent to Wellington nine months ago. Every effort has been made to reach finality in the matter, but without avail, and the unwarranted delays continue. The council is now asked to wait a further two months. Can you say why such a request should now be made, and will you take steps to see that the order is issued immediately? ”
