U-BOAT DESTROYERS. —One outcome of measures taken to defeat the U-boat menace early in the war was the British Government’s decision to build corvettes, small, fast craft, designed solely for the purpose of convoy escort work and the hunting of submarines. Arabis and Arbutus, two corvettes presented to the Royal New Zealand Navy, belong to a class of over 60 ships which are armed with four-inch anti-aircraft guns, multiple pompoms, and depth charges. They carry complements of about 60 men.
