AIR HITCH-HIKERS

VISIT NEW YORK FROM CAIRO NEW ZEALANDERS ON LEAVE LONDON, Feb. 28. Sharp-eyed “ detectives ” of the R.A.F. police keep a close watch on all planes flying to Britain from Africa for “ hitch-hikers ” seeking a few days’ unofficial home leave, says the Algiers correspondent of the Daily Mail. American airmen have been specially generous in giving a lift home to British officers and men, many of whom are known to have paid clandestine flying visits to Britain when technically on leaVe in North Africa. The record “hitch-hike” was made by two New Zealanders who returned to Cairo a day overdue after eight days’ leave. The explanation to the orderly room was: “We have been to New York.” This was true. American friends had taken them as passengers to New York, which is only four days’ journey from Cairo.
