DESTRUCTION OF SHAGS
During the nesting season in 1943, shag “ drives ” conducted by the Otago Acclimatisation Society acopunted for 312 old birds, 194 young birds, and 127 eggs, a total of 733 shags and eggs. Giving these figures yesterday, Mr L. Millar, secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, said that organised parties had visited the rookeries, a system which had proved more successful than the practice of paying a royalty. In 1938-39, when full supplies of ammunition were available, the total number of birds and eggs destroyed was 662, but mainly owing to the lack of ammunition it was only 306 in 1941-42. It was realised, he added, that there was still a considerable number of black shags in the district, and if ammunition were available the present policy would be maintained. The streams in which “ drives" were made were the Pomahaka Waikaia, Taieri (in the Styx district). Lindis, Shag, Waipori, Waikoualti, and Catlins.
