CAR SMASH

ELDERLY WOMAN KILLED FIVE PERSONS INJURED An elderly woman was killed, and her daughter and four men were injured when two cars met in a head-on collision between Omakau and Alexandra about 7.45 last evening. The names of those involved in the accident were: Killed Mrs Margaret Wilson Mclntosh, a widow, of Poolburn. Injured Mrs Ferguson, Poolburn. George Smith, Alexandra. James Rae, Alexandra. William Rae. Alexandra. Hugh Elvidge, traveller, Dunedm. James Rae and William Rae are brothers, and both returned recently from the Middle East. All the injured persons suffered fairly serious head and facial injuries, as well as concussion and shock. The accident occurred about a mile on the Alexandra side of Omakau. It is understood that Mrs Mclntosh and her daughter, Mrs Ferguson, who resided with her at Poolburn, were travelling towards Omakau when their car came into collision with the car containing the four men. Though help arrived within a few minutes, Mrs Mclntosh was already dead. The injured people were taken immediately to the Clyde Hospital, by private cars, but as only three could be accommodated there, Messrs Elvidge and William Rae were taken on to the Cromwell Hospital. The front portions of both cars were completely wrecked.
