CONTROL IN ITALY

BADOGLIO GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY EXTENDED (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 10. The Allies have handed over to the Badoglio Government control of new areas in Italy, bringing the total population under Italian control to 10,000,000, says Reuter’s correspondent at advanced headquarters in Italy. The Badoglio Government now controls the territory south of the northern borders of Salerno, Potenza, and Bari, as well as Sicily. Allied control commission officers will advise Italian officials, and officials of the Allied Military Government will be withdrawn. The Badoglio Government already administers Sardinia and Apulian province.

King Victor has signed a decree deleting all anti-Semitic laws from the Italian Statute Book and restoring Jewish Government and municipal employees to their positions. The handing over to the Badoglio Government of a large area of Southern Italy is in conformity with the recommendations of the Allied Advisory Council last December, says the Press Association’s diplomatic correspondent. There was some delay because of the difficulty in devising adequate safeguards. The Italian Government will administer the territory under the supervision of the Allied Control Commission, whose function it is to oversee Italian administration and ensure that it carries out the terms of the armistice.
